Poor homeless Mayor James: No Hillary to coattail Cleaver to WDC new cabinet job, thus Sly can't run to replace Cleaver in Congress! Time to actually BUY a home in KCMO?

The saddest clown in town is clearly Mayor Sly James.
Mayor Sly James tugs on his bow tie...
His secret plan to ride the glory train to Washington was thwarted by the election of Donald Trump.

When will voters and taxpayers demand their Mayor actually BUY a home here???
Did you ever wonder why your mayor does not OWN a home in KCMO???  (He rents, on Union Hill.  108 E. 30th St.--where there are often campaign signs for friendly Dems and his endless tax increases.)  He sold his famous home on Mannheim Road in Hyde Park, the one where he was then caught early this year during his re-election campaign, by Clay Chastain's campaign for being delinquent on paying property taxes on two beater cars.

You know about that.  The election board --and the media--simply ignored the clear violation.  Because Sly's opponents were The General, a homeless man with no phone number who slept on friends' extra beds or at the motel on The Paseo.  And Clay Chastain, who lived in Virginia, and slept at his sister's house when he occasionally visited KCMO.  (at least we hope it's a separate bed...)

The plan that fell apart:
Run for an easy re-election, since the 1000 other lawyers in town sat it out.  Check.  How hard was that?
Then support Hillary for President.
Congressman Cleaver was then hoping to be appointed to either a cabinet position OR some department head or a job with either the Clinton Foundation or the Obama Foundation.
He's already locked up HIS lifetime pension, having served more than two terms.
And when the appointment job would be over, Cleaver could then become a lobbyist, like Senator Blunt, and have Dianne Cleaver and a couple of kids also become lobbyists.  It's all still legal. And rotten.

Sly James then hoped and planned and prayed and EXPECTED to be APPOINTED by the Dem. Central Committee to replace Cleaver in Congress--from which he could then run in 23 months for re-election--as an incumbent.

He and his wife could then move to WDC!  Buy a home THERE!~!!
Better parties, more fun.  And a much longer mass transit train to ride for years--at taxpayer expense.

And, like Kansas' senior Senator, Pat Roberts has done for years, just RENT in his home district.  In fact, Roberts only rents a room and a Barcalounger in a sycophant's home in Garden City.  Not even a whole house!!
Sly James hoped to buy this Barcalounger to keep in a back badroom of a rented condo in KC when he went to Congress on Clinton's and Cleaver's generous coattails...

Well, as the Norwegians say, "Uffda!"  (Jews say "oy veh".    Same diff.)

So now Sly James is stuck in purgatory: KCMO--with a crumbling infrastructure, no sugar daddies or Queen Hillary to support him.  And worst of all--no big future ahead of him.  Mayor is generally the end of the line.

But hey--consider this!  If Sly James succeeds in somehow conning the public into extending his Toy Train down to the Plaza, then the fake paid protesters will be able to ride, for free, all the way from Nichols Fountain to 12th St!  Then they just have to manage to drag their bought-and-paid-for protest signs and their giant papier mache effigies of President Trump four blocks from Main to Oak.  (Nobody had time to make those artworks that fast.)

Because the truth is--KC is not a walking town.  And protesters really never walk very far.  It's too hard on the TV News crews to capture and edit that much footage.  Thepaid protesters were handed those signs.  They were handed those effigy artworks and the matches.  They were paid to walk.  By the mischief maker man who visited Obama's White House 342 times the past eight years.  It's all a fake.  Just like the Ferguson protests.  Paid by outside agitators.

OK.  If you "feel Sly's pain", send a sympathy card to your homeless hopeless mayor.  Or drop it off at 108 W. 30th St.  But don't bother to make it a Hallmark card.  You only do that 'When you care enough...to send the very best.'

Call every cat lover you know. See "Feral Love" one time only, Wed. Nov.9 at 7:35 at KIFF Film Fest, Glenwood Arts/Ranchmart South

OK, I'm calling the race.  Alot of folks are howling and sad about Hillary Clinton's defeat.  Meow!!!  What is needed?  To change the channel in their heads--and there's no better way than watching an absorbing story of a so-called  "crazy cat lady" who is also a respected professional musician 'of note'!.  Followed by a free recital.
This devoted and loving cat lover takes pails of food into the underground tunnels of New York City every day,
The Kansas International Film Festival is winding down at the Glenwood Arts--and still recovering from the HUGE turnout for Ed Asner's visit last Sunday.  (There were actually more fans who came to see Ed Asner and "My Friend, Ed", than turned out to see Hillary Clinton's rally in KCMO last month.  So that tells you everything you needed to know.)
CJ Scheppers, projectionist at Glenwood Arts for KIFF, filmed the line of fans who turned out Sunday to see Ed Asner and his documentary, "My Friend, Ed".  The line was hours long, far longer than the voters who showed up Tuesday  at the precinct voting location which was right behind that blue sign!  Or for Hillary's rally with the Baptist ministers a month ago in KCMO.
There are seven feature films left at KC's 16th annual film festival for independent movies and shorts and animations.  And the very best remaining film --in my opinion--is FERAL LOVE, which like all the KIFF indie films,  with the exception of two of the 35 features that won Jury Awards, are screened only once.

"Feral Love: the Documentary" screens Wednesday only, at 7:35pm--
*  the documentary is 71 minutes long--
*  and THEN there is a Q and A, with Director Markie Hancock and Dorian Rence--
*  and THEN Dorian Rence will play her viola!!!

Now I am biased.  I was a professional violist in the Wichita Symphony.  I won a four year full scholarship to Wichita State based on my playing and my scholastic and leadership activities.  The viola (larger than a violin, and smaller than a cello) has a gorgeous mellow soothing tone.

Here's the IMDB description:
Crazy cat lady or world-class musician? Dorian Rence smashes our notions of what matters and who counts in 'Feral Love.' A violist with the New York Philharmonic for 40 years, Dorian also cares for a feral cat colony in the tunnels of New York City. You decide. 'Feral Love' follows world-class musician Dorian Rence who has performed with the New York Philharmonic for 40 years while caring for a feral colony of cats in the railroad tunnels of New York City.

'I frankly don't see a big difference between the life of a cat and the life of me' she states as we gradually come to understand and respect her work with ferals and her rise to the elite ranks of professional musicians. Born in Oklahoma to a father who was both a farmer and a clarinet player, Dorian started piano lessons at the age of five and then violin lessons. After acceptance to the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music as a violist, she won her audition with the New York Philharmonic at age 21.

Dorian was the seventh woman to enter the New York Philharmonic and has played with all the great conductors and soloists including Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez, Zubin Mehta, Luciano Pavarotti, Isaac Stern, Yo Yo Ma, to name a few. "Feral Love" tracks Dorian as she cares for and ultimately rescues the cats in her colony during a particularly brutal winter. We are accompanied on this journey with the gorgeous music of a New York Philharmonic string ensemble featuring Dorian Rence on the viola.

If you would like two free tickets, leave a polite comment on www.kcmopost.com with your name, number and email--and I will try to get them for you.  (Must leave on my web site, not a Tony comment.  Since I screen all comments, I won't publish your name and number, just preview it to reach you.)   Tracy Thomas, publisher.  And KIFF volunteer.

Update on free tickets: If you missed Rush BrothersMovie at KIFF Film Festival, Glenwood Arts/Ranchmart, come Tuesday 5pm:see the Best Doc and Best Narrative. Enter to win free tix to those.

Impt note:
As Tony says, sometimes Blogger does a hiccup.  So I didn't receive the free ticket request for The Rush Brothers Movie until 10 minutes before the Sat. night show.  And you are probably already there! so: "Pat", I left you a VM--and if you call me Sunday, I will get you two free tickets to ANY OTHER FILM--so sorry!  Select whatever you like--www.kansasfilm.com.

One suggestion is the 5pm shows on Tuesday--based on the Jury Awards this Sunday am at 11--for the best of the best.
5:05 will be Best Documentary (and who know, maybe Rush Brothers will win!!
or--
5:10pm will be Best Narrative.

Personally in that category I hope "Train Station" wins.  I saw it today, and it's amazing.
40 directors from 25 countries spent 3 years making (and financing) their own scenes.
Three of the directors flew in to KC for the week, including one from Dubai!!!

Director Kevin Rumley told me tonight, at the festival party near the sponsoring 816 Hotel, "None of the 40 filmmakers ever met the others.  We only wrote and produced this whole film using email on scripts, etc. And when any director dropped out, after the arduous 3 year process, we just had to pick up the slack, or re-shoot a few scenes, even if the actors had grown beards or moved across the world.   But meeting here today in Kansas City, now we are brothers."

Train Station is about the power of every choice we make, how it changes the trajectory of the rest of our lives.  So in Train Station, every time there is a "choice point" new actors take over for about five minutes.  It's WILD!  Here's a hint to watching it: The protagonist always wears brown, and carries a suitcase, but the actors and actresses change!

If you loved the 1991 movie, "Defending Your Life" with Meryl Streep and Rip Torn and Albert Brooks, you might love Train Station as well.

Tony woulda loved this moment:
During the Q&A, I told the three directors of Train Station--"Be sure to get someone to drive you down to OUR silly little train station--we have a stupid little train that basically goes NOWHERE!!! Two miles up, then back again!!!!

Wish I'd described it as our town's version of Groundhog Day.  Oh well, 20/20 hindsight.

Stop earthquakes NOW! NBC's Lester Holt: ask Hillary and Trump to pledge to stop injecting 200 billion gallons of saltwater into Oklahoma soil. Stop rattling my shower doors!

Shake my shower doors once in Shawnee, shame on you.  (7:02 am for about 20 seconds, Sat. Sept. 3.)  But do it twice, shame on me.  Let's stop allowing earthquakes in Kansas City, because of Oklahoma oil and gas producers pumping their saltwater waste water back into the ground!!!  Duh!!!!

It doesn't take a Schlitterbahn or UG government engineer or that madman Jeff Henry who designed Verruckt on a cocktail napkin, to realize that there is physics and science at work here.  What goes down does not disappear.  Stop pouring your salt water waste on top of the crystalline basement that is full of faults.  Kansas City sits on the New Madrid fault.  That hasn't gone off since 1812.  Let's not taunt it.  Today's 5.6 earthquake tremor was from Oklahoma.  Stop messing around!

It's not what I first thought...Oklahoma fracking for natural gas.  It's the waste from regular oil and gas producers.  So it's not T. Boone Pickens I am after.  But it sure might be the Koch brothers!!!!  (And their boy, Sam Brownback.)
What?  Me Worry?  Kansas has had many more earthquakes recently as well.  I take my cues from the Koch brothers.  We need to keep pumping salt water into the earth, so they can get richer than ever from oil and gas production.  And hey, those LLC's love me--no taxes here in Kansas!  Working!!!

Here's the excellent and comprehensive Bill Whitaker story from CBSNews.com that aired May 8, in full:
Read the 60 Minutes May 8 story here!!!

Note--You do not need to bother subscribing, to see the video, if you just want to read the text, scroll down fast, for free.

Here's the money quote:
Kim Hatfield: You have to understand that injection into the Arbuckle is not something that started in 2009, 2008, or even 2000. This is something that's been going on for 60, 70 years. And we've had-- had a sudden change. And the question is what changed.
The amount of wastewater injected into disposal wells last year is triple what it was in 2009, adding up to more than 200 billion gallons of water in seven years.
Bill Whitaker: The thing that's different is the amount of water that the oil industry is pumping into the Arbuckle Formation. That's what's different. And along with that difference comes these earthquakes. That's not the trigger?
Kim Hatfield: The injection of water is a factor. But it is not possibly the only factor. We don't know.
Bill Whitaker: So-- so what more needs to be done?
Kim Hatfield: We need to understand this issue. It's not as simple as saying, "Well, let's just stop injecting water." The energy industry is very important to the state.
Mike Teague: If it's your house that's shaking there is no way that we're moving fast enough.
Mike Teague is Oklahoma's Secretary of Energy and Environment. He's got the tough job of protecting Oklahoma's anxious citizens without damaging it's most important industry.
Mike Teague: I keep track of all earthquakes above a 3.0 in the state and 2012 we had three dozen in the entire year. 2013 we had 109. Next year we 585. Last year we had 907.
Bill Whitaker: That's an alarming increase.
Mike Teague: Absolutely.
Bill Whitaker: So what have you concluded is the cause?
Mike Teague: Well, the focus right-- is-- right now is disposal wells.
Bill Whitaker: How do you balance out the economic benefit of the gas and oil industry and the public safety?
Mike Teague: I don't think it's a balance. I think public safety has to take precedence.
Mark Zoback from Stanford has been working with Mike Teague and the state earthquake council for more than a year.
Mark Zoback: Lowering the total amount of salt water injection into the Arbuckle is the only way that these earthquakes are gonna start to subside.
--
My job is not to master the science of this.  My job is to prod the elected officials to STAND STILL or STOP WHAT THEY ARE LETTING THEIR CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTORS DO, until they can fix this.

Write to Lester Holt, at NBC News, moderator of the first Presidential debate.  Let's make sure  both Hillary and Trump are put on the hot seat, and asked if they will order a halt to saltwater disposal into the earth's core NOW.
Here's an idea: Since you can't pour saltwater into our rivers, HAUL YOUR WASTE WATER TO AN OCEAN.  OR DESALINATE YOUR WASTE WATER.  Stop causing earthquakes.  It may raise the cost of gasoline.  Maybe time for a Prius???

If only someone at Verruckt had ever made a paper airplane--and taught the team how to distribute the human cargo in the raft

So the Schlitterbahn/Verrucht engineers knew from the gitgo.  Full loaded with 1000 pounds but no humans, the raft went airborne.  Watch the 35 sec. video:

Repeated test failures with sandbags a'flyin.  And every week, passengers reported to staff: we went airborne for awhile!  They.Did.Nothing.

Now anyone who ever made a paper airplane knows: you put weight in the front, to lower the nose.  Not the back.

It's called the coefficient of drag.

They smoothed out the 2nd hill.  To lower the nose of the raft.  But they didn't change the weight minimums, or how the human cargo was loaded on the Verrucht raft carrying little Caleb Schwab to his death and two sisters from Smith Center to the hospital, one with a broken jaw.

Note: I never took physics in high school, but if I can figure this out, they should have, as well.

I have been on my share of airplanes.  Loading the "luggage"--human as well as Samsonite-- keeps the plane from crashing.  Just last December, I had to check my carry-on bag.  I was on a smaller jet.   American Airlines calculated knowing that after Christmas, our passenger carry-on bags were WAY overloaded with gifts.  So they forced us to check them.  Stowed them below us for ballast and balance.

The Schlitterbahn engineers of Verrucht knew enough about load distribution to experiment with seat placement.  Here's the first design with the back seat way to the back wall:

And then they moved it forward:

But on the fateful day, what did the staff do?

Did they put the lightest passenger (maybe 70 pounds?) in the front seat, leaving two heavier ladies to add the required total of 400 pounds in the back????

I'd like to see the training manual for the staff at the top of the slide.  Do you let people decide where to sit?

This disaster is a repeat of the Hyatt hotel collapse.  Inevitable.

How Tony's readers can finally get laid: Bring your date to see Next to Normal, at Crown Center's Musical Theater Heritage, part 2

Most movies and most live theater suck.  The scripts and productions just never get you to the emotional arc that is the whole point.  Same with sports or games or even relationships and families.  If it's not close, if there is no drama, no moment that opens your heart, then you've just wasted another day of your life.

Which is why I recommend you pay $17 and go see Next to Normal.  (read previous post for details.)

Now I've been to lots and lots of live theatre.  I saw 13 plays in 10 days of KC Fringe Festival.  And I see at least one movie per week.   At Glenwood Arts, or the National Theatre Live events at Tivoli--God bless Jerry Harrington for booking those.

Been to Broadway many times.  And when I went to London, I saw 9 plays in 7 days, besides sightseeing etc.  Saw Cate Blanchett.

But until I saw operatic tenor Ben Gulley play the husband opposite Ashley Pankow in Next to Normal, I've never seen an actor actually cry real tears.
Operatic tenor Ben Gulley made me cry.  You will too.
MTH imports the best singer/actors in the country.  Ben Gulley performs nationally, and is half of the tenor duo Gulley/Granner.  {As in the equally sensationally talented, heart-rending Nathan Granner, a KC home boy who, FYI, used to be a regular on Mike Murphy's radio program, and who sang at Cathy Murphy's funeral.  He's not in this show.}

So I've seen good and great singers.  But never one who when he was done singing about his mentally ill wife leaving him, went back to his seat, pulled out his hankie and continued to weep.

THAT is drama.  THAT is the power of a Pulitzer-winning script.    THAT is why you should take your date to Musical Theater Heritage.

If you can't get laid after that, well, there might not be hope for your relationship.
In which case, maybe bring your shrink.  They need to see this musical about therapy too.

One more thing:
To those who ask, "Why do I want to see a musical about a bi-polar Mom and her dead son and dysfunctional family? And whether or not to get ECT, shock therapy????" Well, leave it to George Harter, in his theatrical travelogue, to remind you that from Shakespeare right up to Sweeney Todd, MOST great musical theater surrounds a rather dark story.  That's the whole point.  What's it gonna take to pry open your heart?

There are many light moments as well.  One of the songs is Who's Crazy//My Psychopharmacologist and I.  They list off drugs, from A/Adderal to Z/Zoloft, and with a nod to The Sound of Music, sing, "These are a few of my favorite PILLS!"

This is not a show for kids.  But it's fine to bring your friends, including the 5 1/2% of all Americans who suffer from bi-polar disorder.  Who knew?

Musical Theater Heritage
816/221-6987
mthkc.com
This show ends Aug. 21.
Bring kleenex.
And get there early.
The night I went, I got the last homemade giant $3 brownie.  Just sayin...

And don't forget to grab tix to Cabaret in November, as it should sell out.  Once again, Nazis in Germany--killing Jews and gays--another dark story and another incredible musical play.

Forget playing dangerous Pokemon Go. This week's staycation: Instead of flying to NYC, see Next to Normal at Crown Center's Musical Theater Heritage. Three Tony's and a Pulitzer prize.

Warning: Playing Pokemon Go is low class, dangerous entertainment.  It makes you look like a Donald Trump Duck-Dynasty crazoid.   If you want to watch crazy dysfunctional people, instead make sure they are high-level, not running for office--and can sing.  As in the ones portrayed in NEXT TO NORMAL, the very award-winning musical at Crown Center's Musical Theater Heritage.

I saw it Friday night. (After having seen it on Broadway in 2009, the year it won three Tony's including best score and best actress (Alice Ripley).  I paid $140 for that ticket, but tickets here start at $17.)  Sensational singers with a story that touches your heart.  Who else sings about living with a Mom who is losing her mind?

Listen here as the Mom explains how it feels to be depressed

This is one of the best shows of this season at George Harter's famed MTH concert series.  PS, I've already paid for and booked my seats for Cabaret in November.   (I'll be in the audience, wearing my top hat and fishnet stockings and too much mascara, channeling my inner Liza Minelli.)  That show may sell out soon.  Book now.

Here's the cool thing about MTH:
1.  In August, it's cool as in icy air conditioning.  Totally unlike Starlight Theatre where you melt faster than their overpriced lukewarm beer can cool you.  So cool is it, that if you sit in the seats on the LH side, where the vents pour out chilled air like Niagara Falls, they even keep a supply of blankets for those women who show up in a sleeveless dress, not knowing this secret.

2.  All the seats are CLOSE!!!  You can see the singers' tonsils and whether or not they use Botox.  It's intimate.  Getting seats that close in NYC would cost you well over $225.  Or $800 if it's Hamilton, version 2 without Lin Manuel Miranda.  That's the other major drawback at other local venues like Starlight, where you are sitting a football field away, with some stupid binoculars messing up your mascara.  (Well, not for guys like Tony.  He doesn't wear mascara except to go to The Edge of Hell Friday and Saturday nights in September.)

3.  At MTH, it's a semi-musical. All the best features, without the big drawback. They hire MUCH better singers--the best in town or imported.  They wear costumes and makeup and they deliver their lines--but there's no bad dancing!  It's like going to the prom and getting the goodnight kiss or whatever--without having to watch people do the frug or the waltz or twerking--whatever--badly.  See, producers George Harter and Chad Gerlt figured out a better formula.  It's like cheesecake light.  All the flavor, with half the calories.

In KC, at Musical Theatre Heritage's production, Ashley Pankow is
every bit as good at singing and acting as Broadway's Alice Ripley.
Next to Normal is an unconventional modern musical about a family pulling together to support a depressed family member.  Instead of head mikes that never capture the lyrics, at MTH, their singers step up to the row of concert style big boy microphone stands in the changing spotlights--and belt it out bigger than Ethel Merman.  (Millenials will need to google that.)  You never miss a line--which is great with a 'book' (story and score) like NEXT TO NORMAL.

4.  George Harter gives a fact-laden talk right before the curtain.  He's like the Rick Steves travel guide of musical theatre in the U.S.   Sharing secrets and factoid tidbits it took him a lifetime to learn.

George's talks always set you up to then notice for yourself what is great.  Strong mixed drinks and tasty munchies in the lobby you may take to your seat.  Excellent brownies.  (No pot.  This is Mizzurah, not Colo.)

5.  And, at the end of the show, I've never seen this done ANYWHERE ELSE, and it is GENIUS: the entire cast lines up in the lobby like a wedding reception line, and you get to talk with any or all of them as you walk out!     No going backstage, or queing up for 45 minutes, like I once did for my niece to meet Whoopi Goldberg in NYC.  At MTH, you can't exit without at least the chance to go thru the line.  At the last show, Big River, about Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, one superb singer shared with me where he also sings in a black church every Sunday, because Lordy, Lordy, he had the pipes, the voice of God.

The 'buh-bye' line is GREAT when you bring a shy friend or date who secretly wants to tell a singer, "You were my favorite" and get a hug.  Yep: FREE HUGS FROM THE CAST.  For $17 a ticket, you will be a hero for making that happen.

Windows 10 upgrade still free: to those with "Assistive Disabilities". So if you used glasses to read this, it's not too late!

Whew.  There is a benevolent God.  It's not too late!!!

Windows 10 free upgrade, for Windows 7 and 8 users, technically ended last Friday, July 29.  Yikes, I thought it was gonna be the actual END of the month, which was Sunday!

Well, I discovered ONE of my old laptops hadn't taken the upgrade. I had clicked upgrade, but it failed to load.  Panic!  Not gonna buy an upgrade for a backup unit.  Then I read about the loophole.  And it's not asking you to lie.  Technically, glasses are an assistive device according to someone. After all, it's mandatory to disclose on your driver's license.   You do not have to even answer the question.  Just get to the free link.

Click here for the free extended upgrade to Windows 10.

Now I was a skeptic, and a late adopter.  I waited ten months for fifteen millions of others to work out the bugs.  And I must admit, I do like Windows 10.  They fixed the problems.  None of my files disappeared.

And while I haven't used Cortana, I like Windows 10.  Which IS supported by Microsoft, whereas now Windows 7 and 8 are not.  Note to Luddites: Cortana is Microsoft's search engine, like Apple's Siri or Google's OK Google.  I'm a loyal Google gal.  And I despise Bing.

But in order for Cortana to work like Siri does on an iPhone, you must have a mike working on your computer, (I don't.  Neither a microphone nor a guy named Mike.)  And it creeps me out, knowing that the only way Cortana can listen to you is to LISTEN ALL THE TIME!  Like with a seven second delay.  Even while you are shouting at the dogs.

And yes, even when one is reading Savage Love columns out loud from The Pitch--you know, to improve your vocabulary and use of initials and public speaking skills.
Yes, Cortana!  Yes!!!  Search harder!  --said no one, ever.

And for the record, I now appreciate how HARD Tony works finding free photos to illustrate his great blog.

Now we do not know how long this back door free upgrade will be available.  Don't push your luck.

Tracy dares Tony: see this ONE play at Fringe/Just Off Broadway: Phil Kinen's BEEN FINN, The story of Huckleberry Finn at age 50 meeting his bastard son

I challenge Tony to change his mind.  Fringe Festival, thru July 31, makes a terrific 'staycation'.  For $10 a ticket, (the cost of one great New York City bagel), I'm staying home and spending now thru Sunday July 31 seeing GREAT theatre in a truly great theatre town: KC.

Tony has just poopooed Fringe in the past because he saw the wrong, weaker shows.  Whereas I've invested five hours just researching your options.   This year's 108 choices include many biographies.

Huck Finn if he were 50 meeting his bastard son.  (There is a great swordfight.)  Annie Oakley, Crazy Horse--and two one acts by Tennessee Williams.  Plus the standing-ovation receiving "Mama's Boy"--at Fishtank--the true story of Blake Friis and his mother's suicide--by a charming, talented and wise comic writer with impeccable timing and great heart.
---
BEEN FINN
This show is brilliant.... playwright Phil Kinen has woven in a Jungian interpretation of Huckleberry Finn...the Puer Aeternus boy who never grows up.  And when you see these two characters each do their transformations in personality it is remarkable, believable and breathtaking!

Greg Butell and Jake Leet deliver performances good enough to go straight to Broadway.  Trust me, Butell will have to fend off mega-star actors like Hugh Jackman who would covet the role Kinen wrote and Butell has created.  And Jake Leet is so perfect that he inspired Kinen to complete THIS play out of his series of five Huckleberry Finn plays just so he could co-star in it.  The Johnson County Library is so keen on these plays they pay Kinen a stipend to do monthly updated readings.  This is a big deal.  We've never had a local playwright be so supported.

Read the attached notes, and go see Been Finn.

So far, and this is early in the 11 day Fringe Festival 2016 season,
Phil Kinen's Been Finn is the best show I've seen yet
out of six of the 13 tickets I've purchased.  I also screened 30 teaser performances.  Email me for the rest of my picks.

Been Finn performances thru July 30, 2016:
Monday 8 p.m.; Wednesday 6:30 p.m.; Friday 11 p.m; Saturday 4:30 p.m.
And it may win a bonus performance Sunday July 31.  Check the web site.
Note!  Just Off Broadway Theater is at 3015 Penn Valley Drive--but you cannot get there direcly from 31st St.unless you rapell down the cliff.  ou must come in via Wyandotte.
Either take 31st to Main south by the car dealership at 32nd to Wyandotte.
Or, from the south, via Linwood to Wyandotte.  Then it's behind the orange barricade!!!  But worth it.

Tickets available at the door.
They do have snacks and they sell drinks.
Tickets are $10...available at the door since it is a large venue...it won't be sold out.
But you must have a current 2016 Fringe button: this costs $5 so if it's your first or only Fringe Festival event you have to buy the $5 button as well.  But then you can use it for other great $10 performances and "Fringe" coffeehouse benefits throughout the year.

You may also buy tix, or print out the tix you bought online, in the lower level of Union Station.  Warning, the arrogant dummies at the station turned off the 3 story escalator "to save utilities".  There is a very hidden elevator. Park in Union Station's front elliptical circle and pretend to go to the Post Office, so you don't have to pay $5 just to park and run in to print out tix. Don't get me started.

Sam Brownback's crazy cousin Charlotte is trying to sneak her PTSD boyfriend Greg Goode into the halls of Congress--with a gun!!! Election fixing and bribery charges??

The dumbest serial campaigner in Johnson County is Charlotte O'Hara.  As a three time failed candidate for various offices, and newly divorced from Mr. Sun Tea (aged 83??) now she is trying to get her new handsome unvetted PTSD veteran boyfriend, Greg Goode, elected to replace respected member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, Kevin Yoder in Congress.

But did Charlotte O'Hara bother to "vet" her boyfriend as a suitable candidate first?  Is he a dangerous Manchurian Candidate?  Might his reported psychiatric issues cause him to grab his gun and shoot up the halls of Congress?

Haven't we had enough wrong-thinking armed veterans with PTSD or NPD/Narcissistic Personality Disorder from the Kansas City area for one month?   (eg Cosmo Long, the Baton Rouge cop killer, who changed his name to an Egyptian version of Jesus and the slayer of Ramses II?)

How does this craziness happen?  Follow the money, honey.  And the mortgage.  If you've just divorced your Honey Pot millionnaire hubby, and want to get outta Dodge, or rather your palatial Montana style southern OP mansion, well, Annie get yourself a gun-toting hunky boyfriend, prop his *ss up and why not gallop to Washington DC.

You can fool some of the people some of the time.
--Abraham Lincoln at the 1856 National Republican Convention

Just how 3D:ditsy/delusional and dumb is Charlotte O'Hara, the campaign manager and fixer for Greg Goode?

1.  Well, many recall Jeff Roe's former politico pal, the late Pat Gray.  When Charlotte ran against Annabeth Surbaugh for chairman of the Johnson County BOCC/Commission, the FIRST time out of two, Gray hustled Charlotte and the aging Mr. Sun Tea hubby, out of $675,000!!!  Gray mailed postcards with virtually no copy.  Just cupcakes on the cover art.  Huh?  She came in third, spending an estimated $33.75 PER VOTE!

2.  I know.  I came in fourth in that race in 2002.  I spent a measly $7 grand, and received 10,000 votes.  A cost of 70 pennies per vote.  Pat Gray used to work for me.  I said at the time, "If I had just spent $500 on an ad in The Pitch to land me a rich sugar daddy husband, I'd have won."

3.  Charlotte O'Hara, a lovely woman in person and a good mom,  five adopted kids, is known as the "Queen of Gallop-polling Ambition".  She has told me twice about the
BROWNBACK FAMILY DYNASTY PLAN!!
I have a dream....of no taxes...
Cousin Sam was in the US Senate at the time.  He realized how jacked up that was, so he was coming home to Kansas, would run and serve as Governor twice, (which he now has) then ascend to the Presidency from here. (Oops.)  She would run for Ks. Senate, (oops, third loss in a row) and then take the Governorship.  (How's that workin' for ya?)

Oops.  Time for Plan B.  So like Scarlett O'Hara at Tara, Charlotte O'Hara divorces--or is divorced by--the Sun Tea Sugar Daddy. (Think Anna Nicole Smith.)

Scarlett/I mean Charlotte loses mansion!!!!
Stalks and finds boyfriend Greg Goode.  Retired Army Lt. Colonel.  And if she can just manage to fool enough voters to get her Manchurian Candidate through the Aug. R. primary, she can escape Tara, I mean her plans to move to Topeka, and gallop into Washington DC society.
"I'll think of it all tomorrow.  On K Street."
4.  So O'Hara skips the vetting process, well, maybe a couch audition.
Gotta love a man in camo.
Oops--she didn't see this on Match.com!
She runs the new boyfriend for Congress, on a strategy of voting out all incumbents.  Reportedly, it was Charlotte O'Hara who sought out Kansans for Life for Goode's endorsement.  Instead he took the fake version, a volunteer ministry fraught with a dreadful past history, called Kansas Coalition for Life.  Ks. Coalition for Life is a small group in Wichita who are the Troy Newman group of folks who refuse to get along with anyone, and as you may recall, his secretary CHERYL Sullinger's phone number was found in GEORGE TILLER'S murderer car when he was arrested. If you google CHERYL, you will find she is a FEDERAL FELON FOR ATTEMPTING TO BLOW UP A WEST COAST ABORTION CLINIC.

Staycation alert! Best singers in town, coldest A/C, former 8 Tony award blockbuster BIG RIVER, at Crown Center's Musical Theater Heritage thru Sunday! Kids attend free. Plus free movie night on First Fri.

Do you and your date--or entire family--need a great night out, a "staycation"?  Something that gives you goosebumps?  And not just because their A/C is set at 67??  My playwright/Hollywood promoter friend Bill Doty is my guru for music and theatre and film.  When it's good, he sees performances multiple times.  We agree: "KC is remarkable for its talent for singers and actors.  Much better than Denver, rivaled in the Midwest only by Chicago."

Note: Kids come free, if you sit in the more affordable side seats, which are great: I know from experience.  You are close to the action!   Get tix here.  Today.  Since you won't be seeing Hamilton till 2018, for $1200 a ticket, LOL.

Doty's latest pick?  He writes, "Go see BIG RIVER, at Crown Center's Musical Theater Heritage, on the 3rd floor of Crown Center Shops.  Their concert-style performance is THE best performed piece of  exciting, fast-paced theatre I’ve seen in years (or ever).

BIG RIVER is an absolute killer – in which every single song is a show stopper.

Concert-style performances allow the Director to choose fantastic voices – not having to worry about “selling” the tune, marching back and forth to use the entire stage, using props, painted sets and so forth.

These performers, including Kip Niven, are absolute virtuoso’s – the likes of which we’d like to see on Broadway.  Incidentally, this show could be picked up and put on Broadway, as it stands, without changing a word.

BIG RIVER is a musical that I had seen once before by the national company, based on Mark Twain’s 1884 book “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.”   It's the first musical the late Roger Miller ever wrote and, he said at the time, the most difficult music he ever wrote.  Musical Theater Heritage Founder and Executive Producer George Harter said that the first production won 7 Tony Awards and then the revival garnered another 9 nominations and won another Tony for Excellence in Theatre.  So that's as many nominations as Hamilton got.

'Big River' is described as one of the few, if not the only American musical in the Eighties to rise above a failing Broadway, invaded by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s smash hits, the “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Evita,” “Phantom...,” “Joseph/Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “CATS” phenomena and the venerable “Les Miserables” (Schonberg-Boubil).  {Doty should know.  He spent a dinner in London seated next to Andrew Lloyd Webber, and was offered house seats to CATS.}
I will be going again.  “Big River” will play through this Sunday, June 26 on Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun’s.  If you like theatre and haven’t seen this one – you haven’t seen what theatre can be... The Best!"

First Friday Film Festival - Kansas City
 - 2016 is the inaugural season of the FIRST FRIDAY FILM FESTIVAL. FREE TO THE PUBLIC, short film festival recurring every first Friday, after most of the galleries have closed. Protestors at VAXXED, the controversial autism/vaccine expose at Glenwood Arts, refused offers of free tickets to see what they were protesting.

One of the most important films you will ever see: VAXXED: From Coverup to Catastrophe is showing ONLY at the Glenwood Arts, ONLY thru Thursday.  12:05, 2:30, 4:40 and 7:05pm.  It was banned at the Tribeca Film Festival, by Sloan Kettering Hospital, a big sponsor who threatened to cancel their sponsorship.  Then AFTER the festival, founder Robert DeNiro, (who has a child with autism but was outvoted) said on the Today Show, "I think this film is something everyone should see."

Class act Glenwood Theatre co-owner Brian Mossman offered free tickets to half a dozen protesters of VAXXED.  The refused to watch the movie, or learn about what they were protesting.  Did Merck the vaccine manufacturer just pay them or their families to protest???

You may think you know what you believe.  I did.  This film changed my mind: I am not against all vaccines.  But we should spread them out, especially for black kids.  I watched with an open mind.  See the pediatrician (they are the vaccine distributors/administrators following the CDC mandated schedule) admit: "I've been lied to by our government.  I've endangered my young patients' lives."

Now I kinda expected controversial Dr. Andrew Wakefield to be a clone of wild-eyed crazy man Clay Chastain, former KC resident zealot for light rail.  He is not!   Wakefield is thoughtful, respectful, and he has strategic suggestions.

Space out the vaccines.  Separate Measles from Mumps from Rubella like we did in the 50's--when autism was 1 in 150,000.  Now its 1 in 67.  Administer one vaccine a year.   Rather than a toxic cocktail of three live virusses.  What could go wrong!  And delay innoculations--not at 15 months for black kids.  A bit later.  Congress needs to call the CDC whistleblower who admits exactly how they fraudulently deleted data and cooked the books.  And, end Vaccine Court, the 1986 US law that exempts Big Pharma from all damages, based on the CDC's corrupt data.  Those ideas all make great sense, don't they?

The black Mom in the film was compelling--she has twins.  The son had the vaccine and became dangerously disabled autistic.  His twin sister did not receive the vaccine.  She's a genius, playing concertos on the piano.
Hey, Minnie--are those polka dots?  Or measles??  But at least you are not autistic for life!!!!  675 cases of measles vs 1 million kids and families lives ruined by the CDC coverup that subsidizes Merck and other vaccine Big Pharma manufacturers.  One vaccine on the market equals $30 billion in profits.  No wonder Congress sold out to Big Pharma.

I love how the Disney lobby is upset that 675 kids got measles last year at Disneyland.  Well, what about the 1 million kids, mostly boys, who contracted autism the same year?  Where's their lobby???
And now California wants to mandate following the CDC schedule?  Hear the facts.  Change your mind.

Maybe families should wait till their kids are older to be vaccinated, and THEN take 'em to Disneyland.  Or the halls of Congress--to watch the horror show called "Big Pharma Zombies Buy Your Congressman and Suck His Blood."  (Maybe that will play this fall, Nov. 4-10 at the Ks. International Film Festival at the Glenwood Arts.)

MANY thanks to www. tonyskansascity.com for posting a 30 min. review video.  You may see it at his post for Sunday at 5:30am.

Hugely controversial documentary at Glenwood Arts starts Fri: VAXXED: Autism//Vaccination/CDC Coverup --with Dr. Andrew Wakefield. 613 tickets presold!

Tell everyone you know who has a child with autism: VAXXED:From Coverup to Catastrophe is showing one week only at the Glenwood Arts.

Jenny McCarthy (dated Jim Carrey and Mark Wahlberg) is the mother of a child with autism.  She says her healthy son contracted it immediately after he received  the MMR/live triple virus measles vaccine.  She wrote the forward for "Callous Disregard" defending Dr. Wakefield for pursuing the CDC in covering up the link of too many live vaccines at once, and the MMR in particular, to autism.
In 2016, then Dr. Andrew Wakefield, author of "Callous Disregard", (with the forward by Jenny McCarthy), directed the documentary film Vaxxed:From Coverup to Catastrophe. The film reports "an appalling cover-up committed by the CDC, our government agency/Center for Disease Control, charged with protecting the health of American citizens.   Staffers deleted evidence showing the long-suspected link between the triple live MMR measles vaccine and autism.  This alarming deception has contributed to the skyrocketing increase of autism and potentially the most catastrophic epidemic of our lifetime.  By 2030, 80% of all boys could have autism or Aspergers Syndrome--be "on the spectrum" as the community of exasperated parents calls it.
Skeptical???  Worth noting: The CDC already covered up the AIDS virus for a decade till it jumped from gays to Ryan White.  Then Lyme Disease.  And let's not forget the Tuskegee Airmen, our US Army secretly gave them venereal disease, and studied them for decades!

VAXXED is controversial.
Open your ears--before you open up your kids' veins.
At least consider spacing out your vaccines.

The film was withdrawn from the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival.  Local New York festival sponsors had threatened to stop their financial support.  Wakefield called this action CENSORSHIP.
After the festival, (when the sponsors' money had prevented the viewing), the festival's founder, Robert DeNiro, who has a child with autism, said on NBC's TODAY program, "I think the movie is something that people should see."
Come to the Glenwood Arts this weekend, 95th & Mission, and decide for yourself. To avoid long lines, fineartsgroup.com.
Dr. Andrew Wakefield, Q&A following VAXXED documentary, this Fri. Sat. only, at 5:10pm and 8:q5 pm shows at Glenwood Arts, 95th & Metcalf.  Tix in advance: fineartsgroup.com

Former British doctor Andrew Wakefield, plus the director plus a mom of an autistic child will answer questions...Fri and Sat., 5:10 pm and 8:15 pm June 10 and 11 only.
Over 613 tickets have already been purchased for this weekend--more than any other film every shown at the Glenwood Arts since it opened in 1982.
Just please don't be one of those ninnies who threatens the owners, including Brian Mossman, saying "If you dare show that film, I'm never coming to your theatre again!"  Right, and you're moving to Canada if Trump is elected.  This is America.  Land of the First Amendment, not just the Second.
According to Brian Mossman, co-owner, and President of KIFF, the Kansas International Film Festival (Nov. 4-10),  "To date, VAXXED has aired without incident at 25 theatres across the country.  It was banned by the Tribeca Film Festival, plus one independent theatre in Houston.  We will show this film for one week only...Fri. June 10 - Thurs. June 16.  It will not be held over.  I urge protesters to keep an open mind...and come ask questions.  This is what documentaries and film festivals like KIFF are all about."
For the record: Here's what the opposition said (per Wiki):
Dr Ian Lipkin, professor of epidemiology and director of the Center for Infection and Immunity at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, writing in the Wall Street Journal, said: "If “Vaxxed” had been submitted as science fiction, it would merit attention for its story line, character development and dialogue. But as a documentary it misrepresents what science knows about autism, undermines public confidence in the safety and efficacy of vaccines, and attacks the integrity of legitimate scientists and public-health officials."
